Designer Monika Kowalska opened the doors to A Détacher on Mott Street in New York City in the fall of 1998. Having moved back to the US after studying fashion design in Italy and working with Sonia Rykiel in Paris, the Polish designer decided to create a line and boutique that held a more personal expression for her. A Détacher explores form and function while intertwining abstract art with modern design for a collection full of artistic prints, textured fabrics and novel shapes. Despite the high profile and influence of her brand, Monika is intent on keeping the business small and is selective about the stores she works with. Nearly 20 years after introducing us to her personal aesthetic, her contemporary line of women’s wear and accessories still has us hooked.
