Unglazed lidded vessel predominantly matte black with a tinge of charcoal iridescence of green, and copper. Textural nodes kiss the surface throughout. Fired in the process of Raku with the unique raw matte finish that comes from unglazed Raku pottery. Wheel-thrown by ceramist Leland Lowe Found with a special handwritten note describing the piece dated, July 1991. Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramics technique that dates back to the 16th century. The firing process yields a truly uncontrollable and unique finish due to the starvation of oxygen within the dry material it cools in straight from the kiln. When cooling in an unglazed clay body, like the vessel listed here, it pulls oxygen from the clay itself creating natural hues and matte black texturing.
