Dr. Martens may have fashion icon status now, but they were originally created as a durable line of work boots with an air cushioned sole by Dr. Klaus Maartens after WWII. Teaming up with an engineer to start production, the boots were first favored by older women in the UK. It wasn’t until April 1, 1960 that the eight-hole boot (the 1460) we all know and love was introduced to the public. Ever since then they have become a cultural symbol of rebellion, associated with New Wave punk, grunge and the Nineties. These boots have been worn by everyone from Kurt Cobain and Sid Vicious to Alexa Chung and Chloë Sevigny. Dr. Martens is truly an ageless brand that will be just as relevant in 20 years as it is today.
Aw yeah!
