The Boutique
There is no secret meaning behind this shop’s coded name. Clayton Chan, co-founder and creative director, named 017 after messing around on Photoshop and discovering he really liked the way the numbers looked together. That simple visual pushed him to build it into a brand. Situated in Vancouver’s Gastown, this shop provides an original perspective on fashion through a diverse and thoughtful selection of designers. By combing through the market for hard-to-find labels and sought-after contemporary designers, Chan stocks the space with everything from t-shirts to pants to coats that all blur the line between traditional mens- and womenswear 017’s motto: “If we don’t have full faith in a brand and their product, we simply will not carry it.” Amen.
The Designer
The multidisciplinary project Études Studio was formally hatched in 2012, though the working relationship of co-founders Jérémie Egry and Aurélien Arbet far predates this decade. The Frenchmen met on Paris’ graffiti scene in the late ‘90s, a subculture which continues to inform their work, which includes designing menswear, publishing books, and serving as a creative agency to other brands. Paris, too, remains an important influence on Études’ output, with Egry heading up the company’s Marais studio while Arbet manages a complementary studio in Brooklyn.
