Designer Notes: Post-Imperial
We caught up with Post-Imperial designer Niyi Okuboyejo to learn more about the rare Nigerian dying process used throughout his collection and, in particular, the signature Lagos Shirt. "The Lagos shirt is our best seller at Post-Imperial for good reason. It is a perfect mix of continental cool and contemporary vibes. The Galactic combo shirt is my crowning achievement to date because it perfectly illustrates what Post-Imperial is all about: creating something new by mixing the familiar with the unfamiliar. The shirt is constructed in New York from a seersucker base that is dyed in Nigeria through a process called Adire (a rare hand-dyeing process developed by the Yorubas in the Southwest region of Nigeria). On one side is a standard polka dot. On the other side is an update on a traditional motif that represents the sun and the cosmos. Both patterns clash to create an organized chaos that reflects 21st century Africana for the global village."
