Ladies Who Launch
As two companies that constantly covet the latest pieces from up-and-coming and indie brands, it’s safe to say that Lisa Says Gah and Garmentory are members of the mutual admiration society. That said, it was only a matter of time before we teamed up with the stylish online retailer for one of our coolest collabs yet.
Our co-founder Adele Tetangco first connected with LSG’s head babe Lisa Bühler when they found themselves happily stuck with each other during New Zealand Fashion Week. Unsurprisingly, they bonded over mutual interests and started brainstorming of ways to work together.
Admittedly, Adele and Lisa have individual personal styles, which presented a unique challenge as they started dreaming up a 6-piece collaborative collection.
Their must-haves included being accessible to both their customer bases, made ethically (the manufacturing takes place just a block away from LSG’s San Francisco headquarters), and — obviously — super cute. The result is a dreamy, perfectly picnic-ready summer collection of tops, bottoms, and one totally flattering wrap dress made of breezy light blue or black-and-white gingham linen.
To give you all a bit more insight into this dream team, we got the scoop straight from the mouths of these boss ladies. Read on to learn how they first fell in love with fashion and the icons whose closets they’d raid, as well as how they’d style their fave pieces in the new collection.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN JUST THREE WORDS?
LB: Classic, artsy, with a sprinkle of the latest trend.
AT: Oversized, minimal, oversized.
WHAT’S YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF BEING INTERESTED IN FASHION?
AT: It was my 6th birthday. Someone gifted me a couple of extra long white pearl-sized beaded necklaces and a pair of shutter shades.
LB: As a kid, going back to school after summer break was really scary for me as each new year I feared I'd forgotten everything over summer. A little dramatic, I know! I had a little clothing budget for back to school shopping and this got me out of bed and excited to go back to school. I realized that fashion was important to me and was not just as a phase but it always stuck with me, something that I always cared about. Over time I knew it was a talent I had and a space I could see myself working in.
WHO’S YOUR CURRENT STYLE MUSE?
LB: Diane Keaton meets Solange meets Chloë Sevigny.
AT: Dorothy on Golden Girls. I want her whole wardrobe.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE ITEM I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IN MY SUMMER WARDROBE IS _________.
AT: A bag big enough to fit a bottle of rose.
LB: A transparent tote bag.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE GETTING DRESSED AND HOW DO YOU GET PAST IT?
LB: Some days nothing looks right and my answer to that is to add a blazer. It can polish your look just like that!
AT: Pants are my frenemy, especially jeans! Sometimes I feel too bloated to wear them. To get past it, I put on something waist-less like an oversized dress or an oversized jumpsuit with a t-shirt over it (not under). Then I add a fun pair of shoes. I like wearing things I can eat in — so that ends up being my go-to.
LET’S TALK ABOUT THE NEW COLLECTION. WHAT INSPIRED IT?
AT: Lisa and I both share the same passion of supporting independent and emerging fashion, so it made sense to join forces. Plus, she’s super smart and funny! I knew that it would be fun to work with her like this.
HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN THE WOMAN FOR WHOM IT’S DESIGNED?
LB: The new collection was about how you'd want to dress for every occasion this summer. From vacation to staycation, to date nights and brunches. The pieces lend themselves for transformation. Because you're a busy woman and you need options but at the same time need to simplify!
AT: I honestly think that this mini collection isn’t just for a particular woman, but for many types of women. The price point is so accessible and there are six different styles, which allows for so many different ways to style each piece. It’s for everyone!
IF YOU HAD TO PICK A FAVORITE PIECE, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND HOW WOULD YOU STYLE IT FOR SUMMER?
AT: I’d pick the Capri Tie Top. I actually already have plans to wear it as a vest with a turtleneck for fall.
LB: I love the shorts! I don't necessarily love dress cover-ups and really just like to cover my bum. I love the high waist, so it pairs with a swim top nicely. I'm packing these for the beach and wearing them for my weekend errands.
