Meet Our Holiday Gift Set Curators
Ready or not, the holidays are here. We’re kicking off the season with nine gift sets curated by admirable women across creative disciplines, in collaboration with Poketo, the Los Angeles creative hub for design-conscious goods. The gift sets are made up of everything from artful stationery goods to upgraded beauty products – each a unique collection reflecting the enviable panache of the woman that hand-selected them.
We’re so psyched on this group of women and know you will be, too, once you get to know them a little better. Scroll for our take on online speed dating and a bonus holiday-inspired Q&A.
Meet Ilana Kohn
Fashion designer. Jumpsuit extraordinaire. Cat lover. This Brooklyn-based creative (and one of our true lady loves) started her eponymous line after years working as an illustrator for cool places like The New Yorker. Now a cult-favorite in the contemporary fashion world, Ilana Kohn spends her days at her charming studio in Brooklyn. “I'm pretty particular about what I keep at the studio — much more so than at my apartment, ‘cause at home there are three very rude felines and a messy boy,” she says. “Fancy office supplies make us happy at work! We keep the studio tidy in style.” Enter Ilana's Tidy Studio set: a curated collection of little things to make studio life more peaceful and productive. Shop it here.
WHAT ARE YOU GETTING YOUR CATS FOR THE HOLIDAYS? Please, every day is a holiday for those jerks.
Meet Lisa Bühler
Lisa Bühler is a woman of many talents. She is the founder of Lisa Says Gah, the online shop and blog spotlighting independent designers and voices, a curator and a photographer. Not to mention an investment shoe evangelist. She resides in San Francisco, cohabitating with her husband Louis and their cat George. Her Day Off gift set is filled with essentials for downtime, from a stylish key ring for heading out to an arty coloring book for staying in. Check it out here.
WHAT WAS THE MOST EMBARRASSING HOLIDAY OUTFIT YOUR MOM MADE YOU WEAR? I loved holiday outfits as a child! The velvet dresses and matching bows, sparkle socks and mini purses. Holidays were my chance to get my mom to buy me a new outfit, so no complaints here!
Meet Éva Goicochea
Creative strategist, web designer, and co-founder of both Maude (a line of simple sex essentials) and Tinker Watches (a customizable collection of minimal timepieces). Éva Goicochea lives in New York City and knows a thing or two about busy mornings, hence her Very Good Morning set, which includes a tortoise comb, charcoal toothbrush, SPF 30 sunscreen, a sturdy mug and one of the best smelling candles we know. “These are some of my favorite things to start the day with,” Eva says. “I light the candle and the water for coffee, brush my teeth and my hair, and even if I have no time, I always leave the house with sunscreen on.” Check her set for an upgraded AM routine.
FAVORITE CLICHE HOLIDAY ACTIVITY? I am really into mulled cider and mulled wine. Mulled anything, really. Throw some bark and some cloves in a cup and I'm happy.
Meet Julia Sherman
Fine artist turned food aficionado bridging creative worlds. Julia Sherman has always been an artist amongst other things: she worked as photographer on B Horror flicks, shot makeup, was a research assistant, and iced cupcakes at a bakery, all while keeping an active studio. In 2012, Salad for President was born, the venue that brings together all her talents: photography, writing and the ability to weasel her way into strangers' homes. “My real talent is not in making salable art objects, but in the way I connect with strangers and draw them into my own practice,” she explains. “In this way, the garden and the kitchen presented themselves as opportunities for me.” Her Artful Entertaining set includes purifying Kishu charcoal, a tea towel set, totem candle, and, of course, a copy of Salad For President: the book. Find it here.
FAVORITE HOLIDAY SWEET TREAT TO INDULGE IN? No doubt lots of wine, but in the dessert category I do love pumpkin pie.
Meet Lindsay Jang
Canada to NYC to Hong Kong. Lindsay Jang is the co-owner and co-founder of female-driven media platform Missbish, Yardbird, RONIN and Sunday’s Grocery. She is a mom of two, a yoga instructor, and a classic Libra with rooster tendencies. Her loves include: Alexander Wang, weed, and candles, which brings us to her High Vibes desk set starring a ‘Kush’ scented candle. It also includes coordinated lucite stapler and tape dispenser, plus personalized stickers. Stickers!!! See it here.
HOLIDAY HANGOVER CURE? Vitamins, Advil liqui-gels and SLEEP!
Meet James Kicinski-McCoy + Katie Hintz-Zambrano
The cool mom duo behind Mother magazine. James: Nashville-based store owner and mom of four that range from five years old to seventeen. Katie: Mom to Diego and founder of In Good Company, a conference for creative, entrepreneurial mothers. Together they curated the Cool Kids set for us, which includes a cat-shaped wooden plate, splatter napkin, “Get It Girl” card, agenda planner, and nostalgia-inducing gel pens. A little something for kids, plus a little something for mum. "I like that there are some fun pieces for both women and children in it,” says Katie. “Each piece is special and would definitely elicit a little smile and spark of joy from the recipient.” And that’s the whole goal with gifting, right??
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL GIFT YOU’VE GIVEN TO YOUR KIDS? WHAT ARE THEY ASKING FOR THIS YEAR? James: Probably our piano. All of my kids play every day. It’s the best! My little kids are asking for a “playground” in the backyard. Haha! Not sure about that one quite yet.
Katie: When it comes to things, I usually point my family to Diego's wishlist (which we build and edit all year long), so that he gets stuff he can really use or really wants. This year it's a lot of superhero-themed stuff, including DC Superhero Girls, which I'm pretty excited about him gravitating towards. Personally, I'll probably save my money for some fun holiday experiences—like a visit to see a relative, a family road trip somewhere in California, movie theater outings, and a trip to see some real reindeer. We're also saving up for a family vacation to Europe or Latin America this summer.
Meet Marjon Carlos
Freelance fashion writer and brand consultant Marjon Carlos lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, by way of Dallas, Texas. HOLIDAY MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH ON REPEAT? A Christmas Story, Scrooged, or The Godfather – I realize the latter isn't a typical holiday movie, but my brothers and I always love to watch it come Christmas.
Meet Angie Myung
Poketo co-founder and creative director, plus our holiday gift shop partner in crime. Angie Myung is an incredible woman who does all the creative direction for Poketo’s product design as well as overseeing the look and feel of the site and marketing. She believes a visually-appealing work space inspires quality output. All about fewer, better. “The picks I made are from our Holiday campaign, Prism, which is all about how the light reflects and refracts. It's a celebration of something that we take for granted.” Angie’s Beautiful Desk, Beautiful Work set includes an organizer set, ruler, clips, pen, two notebooks, and two planners. “The end of year brings reflection and a chance to start over again. So it's an opportune time for setting goals and resolutions.” Amen.
WHAT’S YOUR SIGNATURE HOLIDAY PLATE? Roasted veggies, so easy to make using seasonal vegetables and great for everyone. Here's an easy recipe from Kitchn: www.thekitchn.com/how-to-roast-any-vegetable-101221
Meet Adele Tetangco
Tiny but mighty, Adele is the Garmentory co-founder. She is extremely enthusiastic about oversized clothes, notorious for starting chants and mis-recognizing celebrities as friends from high school. She aspires to an organized existence, but is coping just fine. “My work space is such a mess. It’s terrible,” she admits. “I thought that if it was a mess with nice things (at the very least), it wouldn’t look as bad.” Enter her Pretty Messy Desk set, perfect for all those messy creatives out there. See the whole thing here.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR FAMILY AROUND THE HOLIDAYS? Watch the Harry Potter series from start to finish.
