Fashion has always played a role in social movements—from demonstrating power and status to conveying hope and solidarity, colors, shapes, and styles in dressing have spoken volumes over the course of history. For the women’s suffrage movement, white clothing served as a powerful and long-lasting symbol. In the early 1900s, while women were lobbying and protesting for the right to vote, wearing white was a visual way to show support and was chosen because white clothing was common, more affordable, and easily accessible. Today, we see women wear white in politics and social events as a way to honor the suffragettes that came before us, and to show sisterhood and solidarity.
To honor and celebrate women, we’ve picked out some of our favorite pearl pieces, from our very own women-owned boutiques and designers in the Garmentory community.
