Boutique Spotlight: Advice from a Caterpillar
Sisters Emily Dyer and Elizabeth Dyer and their mother Susan Dyer, founded the Toronto-based boutique Advice From A Caterpillar to be a source of inspiration for the modern family. Alongside their collection of children's clothing, toys, and home goods, they stock a thoughtfully curated selection of clothing for adults, to make every shopping trip a whole family affair. The sisters told us all about what they value in the brands they stock, their biggest creative inspirations, and where they found the name for their boutique.
When and how was Advice from a Caterpillar founded?
We are named after Chapter 5 in Lewis Carrol’s, Alice in Wonderland. It’s always been a favorite of our mom, Susan, and it appeals to both adults and children. It’s amusing.
Tell us about the buying and curation process of your storefront and which designers to feature.
We work from a set of criteria – much of it is intuitive. We look for collections that present a strong story and have a complete feeling from their packaging to production to branding. The stories of our designers and how they create their products is a fundamental component to how we sell and merchandise. We love to return to our foundation brands each season to witness how they have grown. We look for shapes, colors, themes, sustainability practices, and try to represent the brand’s sensibility.
What/who inspires you?

What trend(s) are you most excited about this season?
This season we are loving the colour palette of curry, smoky blues and pale greys. The pops of neon and animal prints add in dimensions which are fun to play with. Most of the organics that we sell from Europe naturally have a beautiful and familiar fall element so they blend easily with the bolder prints and patterns in the children’s universe.
