ONLY TWO DAYS LEFT TO SHOP OUR SMALL SALE! DON'T MISS OUT
Nowadays, it's a special kind of shop that can weather the retail climate for nearly three decades—but that's just what husband-and-wife owners Cornelia and Jon Wiebe have managed to accomplish at their Calgary boutique, Leo. Open since 1997, the multi-brand men's and women's store focuses on emerging brands and modern minimalism. We chatted with Jon about Leo's foundations, the just-opened second storefront, and their favorite designers to watch.
It’s amazing that you’ve been able to stay in the retail game for so long. How’d you get started and how have you adapted to the changing landscape?
It all started in Winnipeg. Cornelia had just graduated from university and she was working at the top boutique in the city. I had just dropped out of my pursuit of clothing and textile design at UofM. We dreamed up LEO together and named it after our shared astrological sign; the rest is history.
I think the key to our longevity is our love of fashion, art, music, and culture—and our never-ending drive to keep evolving.
What prompted you to open a second location?
We fell in love with Calgary’s emerging Inglewood area, and wanted to be part of the independent vibe that’s developing in that community.
What do you love about the neighborhoods you're in?
Calgary has an amazing food and lounge scene. A few of our favorites are The Eden for some casual French cuisine and Blue Rock Swim Club for its amazing atmosphere and cocktails.
How would you describe the vibe of Leo? Is it the same across both shops, or do they have their own personalities?
Each shop has its own personality but a shared DNA. With each location, we wanted to create a warm showroom experience with personalized service and a carefully curated selection on the racks. As for a soundtrack, our latest music obsession is '90s UK Acid Jazz.
How do you go about selecting new brands to carry in the shop?
We look for authenticity in all the brands we stock. New brands must have a point of view and convey a story.
What are some brands that you’re really excited about right now?
Our new favorite designers have to be mfpen from Denmark, with its vintage-inspired minimalism, and Cordera from Spain, with its handmade details.
Aw yeah!
