Caring for Spring Linens
A home can completely transform with the addition of cozy blankets, fresh towels, and colorful linens. Beautiful home linens look timeless and can also be timeless with proper care. Here are five ways to take care of your home linens to keep them fresh for a lifetime:
1 Read the care labels! It may seem like a simple step, but taking a few seconds to read care instructions can save a beautiful piece. Care labels can provide specific information about laundering and are based on fabrics, weaving types, thread counts, and special dyes that need particular care.
2 If your care instructions advise you to wash by hand, make sure you’re equipped to do it the right way! Prep a big clean space to thoroughly wash, rinse, and dry your linens without getting them soiled in the process. Find hand-washing detergent for delicate pieces and be sure to not ring or scrub so harshly that your piece begins to fray.
3 If your care instructions advise you to wash in the machine, get to know your washing machine settings. Make sure you know how to set specific temperature, rinse, and time requirements to prevent shrinkage, color loss, or damage.
4 Just like in hand-washing, be sure to use a mild detergent, that doesn’t come pumped with chemicals or unnatural fragrances. And don’t use too much detergent, even if it’s natural.
5 When it comes to drying your linens, most likely you’ll want to air dry. Air drying helps to maintain the size and quality of the fabric, and it’s also good for mother earth! Pro tip: when washing your bed linens, make your bed with damp sheets and they’ll dry right on your mattress wrinkle-free.
