Dive into Sea NY’s Fall ’20 Collection
Founded in 2009, Sea is known for reimagining classic silhouettes with a distinctive use of lace, embroidery, knits, and technical fabrics. The result? Pieces that are at once effortless and optimistic, romantic and boyish. Below, Sea founders Sean Monahan and Monica Paolini, talk about their brand and their latest collection, including a poignant nod to the ultimate icon, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Our vision combines Monica’s eye for vintage-feeling pieces and Sean’s leaning towards more modern, clean styles. The lands us with a shared aesthetic that is quietly inviting and elegantly balanced. The pieces feel both youthful and polished.
For the fall ’20 season, the theme was an unexpected combination of craft and texture. We looked to the romance and essence of the Russian countryside, which shows up in the prairie florals and quilting throughout the collection.
Our designs always begin with a fabric, and this season we introduced two sustainable options in recycled wool and vegan leather. We chose an earthen palette and brought it to life with texture and folkish design in printed cotton and hand-crocheted knits. Shades of bubblegum pink and rose add a feeling of femininity.
Whimsical flourishes of a single ruffle or puffed sleeve are carefully chosen and placed. The collection is replete with chunky knitwear and crisp pleated cotton for the essential amount of practicality you’d expect for the season.
After watching the documentary RBG, Monica was immediately drawn to Justin Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s collars—her unique removable eyelet variation has quickly become a brand signature. These embellished pieces are the perfect accessory. Carefully layered over cozy knits and soft dresses, they give subdued shapes new life and interest.
To balance the embellished details, we added clean, modern silhouettes that round out the collection. You’ll find these pieces in standout outerwear and tailoring in faded jewel tones.
