Butter Yourself Up

Melting for butter yellow? You're not the only one. This season is serving up the shade by the slab. The warm pastel ranges in tone from golden to sun-kissed white. It's undeniably cheery. But is it wearable?

To that end, I consulted A Dictionary of Color Combinations Vol 1, a Japanese book I first heard about through one of my Substack subscriptions. I first bought it as a gift (you can find it on eBay), but before I could hand it over, I'd entirely fallen for it as a source of inspiration and ordered a second copy of my own.

I reference color constantly in my work, but this book is helpful beyond the job. I use it anytime I feel stuck on color, whether it’s deciding which throw pillows to buy, which side plates pair best with my dinnerware, or which socks look most stylish with my shoes. It’s fun to flip through, and I almost always end up with combinations I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.
