Sustainability with SIZ
Meet Raquel and Sofia Rodrigues, the designer (and sister) duo behind Portuguese womenswear label SIZ. With a foundation in ethical and sustainable design, they create light and airy separates and dresses that ground fantastical aesthetics with flattering, practical silhouettes. Every piece is constructed by hand—either by SIZ's founders or local seamstresses—for unique collections made with love. Find out more in their own words, below.
We’re Raquel and Sofia, the girls behind SIZ, the coolest sustainable fashion brand you’ve ever seen! We love fashion, but we love our planet as much, so when we create clothes, we always hold that in mind.
When we start thinking about a new collection, we look for a bit of inspiration. For us, that’s often looking at a global issue that we think should draw the attention of the general population. In the past, we’ve referenced climate change, the new nomads, plastic overconsumption and its polluting effect on the ocean, and, lastly, concerns surrounding glacial melting.
In regards to fabrics, the colors are important for us, of course, but the touch is everything! We love samples so much that we dream about them. We search for the most sustainable fabrics, either organic cottons (made from natural seeds, with no use of pesticides or chemicals, which aren’t grown in the same soil over and over again, thus degrading the soil quality), hemp or linen, or other options like deadstock that we rescue from Portuguese factories. Deadstock and off-cuts can be even more sustainable that organic fabrics, as you aren’t producing more fabric but instead are using existing materials that have already used energy, water, and other resources. We also use wooden buttons and deadstock zippers from Portuguese suppliers with whom we have a great relationship.
Speaking of great relationships, we must tell you about our seamstress! We produce the SIZ line locally, and our seamstress’s studio is just a five-minute walk from our headquarters. It’s great because, although we have a small production released in small batches, we’re able to check in at every point in the process, from the initial conception to collecting the final pieces. So, we go there a lot. This also contributes to sustainability in that we don’t have to ship samples back and forth all over the world.
At SIZ, we are always trying to innovate in every way, mainly in the field of sustainability, even when it comes to small things like packaging. For a long time now, we’ve used biodegradable mail packages of all sizes, and we recycle old papers for wrapping. Currently, we’re looking for more sustainable options for our labels. Soon you’ll see cool new things attached to your already sustainable clothes from us. Check out some of our favorite pieces.
A denim miniskirt. Can you ask for more?
Our first bestseller that came to stay forever! In organic cotton, it's easy to wear but hard to choose the color.
