The Immortal Fashion Legacies of Jane Birkin & Sinéad O'Connor
Two icons left us last month. Activists for a better world and for human rights, both were candid revolutionaries—also, when it came to their personal style. The English, French-adopted actress and model, Jane Birkin, passed away on July 16. Ten days later, Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor died on July 26. Gone far too soon, these were women who wanted to improve our world. In particular, they encouraged all women to march to the beat of their own drum, leading by example with beauty and conviction. Birkin’s mini-lengths, bare midriffs, and sans-bra dressing were iconoclastic for a time when women were burdened by the societal norms of dressing. O’Connor’s shaved head echoed that same sense of transgression—not adhering to beauty expectations for women and poignantly displaying her liberty and power to do as she pleased. Their aesthetic choices were part of a larger commentary on issues like women’s rights, the climate crisis, and racism.
When we think of the iconic photos of Birkin or O’Conner from their respective heydays, we realize that we’re still wearing their signature cheeky graphic tees, cut-offs, and more—some 30 to 50 years later. These garments still resonate with the cool, free-spirited woman of 2023. Birkin and O’Conner both championed freedom of expression and although major pop icons, they felt close to us and relatable. Their adoption of counter-culture struck a cord among many and gave us permission to do the same. Recent tributes and posts on social media tenderly immortalize the lives of Jane and Sinéad with personal mementos like, “When I was 16 I cut my hair like you. I will always love you”. It’s the “like you” part that’s so universal. These are words from the middle-aged owner of my local vintage shop but they could also be mine (although I shaved my head at 23), or yours!
With affection and introspection, let’s recall the charisma of these visionaries, Jane Birkin and Sinéad O'Connor. These women undoubtedly understood that style is not frivolous—it’s about genuity and character! Explore their personal style below.
