The New Victorian
Frilly collars, puffy sleeves, lace details, and high necklines—yes, please! The emergence of the Victorian fashion trend feels like a natural progression of summer’s prairiecore/cottagecore, just with an added level of ornamentation, sophistication, and, well, darkness. This particular time of year (ghosts and ghouls and all) skews toward an Edwardian gothic vibe. Think: Wuthering Heights meets Morticia Addams.
To me, the trend’s popularity also seems like a sign of the times. In literature as well as reality, the Victorian era is overcast by themes of disease and adversity—conjuring up images of an unkept Oliver Twist alongside a polished Sherlock Holmes. And the mood of today often feels similarly grim. In a way, Victorian style seems like armor against the elements while also preserving its dignity in the details, and there’s something especially relatable about that right now.
