What to Wear: Summer Weddings
Wedding bells are ringing, it's time for summer nuptials! And while it's exciting to see your favorite couples come together in matrimony, first you have to decide what to wear. Invitations typically include a note on the dress code, but the difference between semi-formal and festive isn't always easy to decipher. We're here to break down some of the most popular wedding attire styles so you'll be comfortable at any celebration.
Black Tie
Only to be surpassed by white-tie events in formality, black-tie weddings are more extravagant affairs, often held in the evenings. Gents have it easy on this one—wear a tuxedo or a white dinner jacket and black tuxedo pants. Ladies should choose something worthy of a red carpet, meaning long dresses (traditional dress codes say you should not show your ankles) or elegant pantsuits. A sophisticated cocktail dress might be appropriate, but consider the atmosphere and perhaps check in with the bride.
Formal
The only difference between formal and black tie is that men don't have to wear a tuxedo; a dark suit and coordinating tie are acceptable. Women, as well, aren't limited to floor-length gowns but should still keep it fancy.
Cocktail
Wedged between formal and semi-formal, cocktail attire is still dressy and elevated but with a few more options. Unlike the above dress codes that call for a more somber palette, the whole rainbow of hues is open to everyone. Men should still wear a suit and tie. Hemlines for ladies don't need to touch the floor, and a ballgown wouldn't be appropriate. A "cocktail dress" is typically on the shorter, but not mini, side.
Semi-Formal
Choosing an outfit for a semi-formal dress code (also called "dressy casual") requires some context clues. Consider the time of day and the venue. If it's an evening event in a more upscale space, err on the more formal side. For a daytime or outdoor wedding, lighter colors and airy fabrics work well. Guys can go with a dress shirt and slacks, or a linen suit for the right setting. Ladies can choose below-the-knee dresses or slip dresses, an elegant top and skirt combo, or a refined pantsuit.
Festive
A festive dress code often comes as an addition (formal festive, casual festive, etc.). In general, you're encouraged to have a little fun. Think bolder colors and patterns, interesting textures, and cool accessories. If there is a theme of sorts to the wedding, lean into that with your look. For example, we recently attended a traditional wedding that brought in elements of the groom's Indian heritage, so many women wore sari-style dresses.
Casual
Often reserved for beach weddings or backyard affairs, a casual wedding dress code indicates a laid-back vibe. Summer sundresses with dressy sandals are appropriate for women, while men should wear dress pants or trousers with a collared shirt (tie optional). Note that a causal dress code does not mean jeans, flip-flops, shorts, or sneakers unless the couple deems them appropriate.
